The research achievements are summarized and reviewed with regard to the scaling issue encountered in the pre-heating process of the Bayer slurry, with an emphasis on the compositions of the minerals causing the scales, the generating mechanism of scaling as well as the recent advancements of research in this field. In the meantime, preliminary personal views on the research into this problem are put forward.
