The inverse analysis of rock movement is the major approach to determination of parameters concerning rock mass mechanis in underground excavation engineering. Two methods of solving were described, and the feasibility for extraction of the protecting pillar under the Nan smelter of Xik-uangshan mine was justified by inverse analysis of rock movement. The analysis has shown that the extraction was fully feasible.
